Every winter, hundreds of New Zealand schools transform gyms and community halls for the ball — and every year, committees discover that the difference between “decorated gym” and “actual event” is mostly light. Here is the playbook we share with schools who come through our doors.
Rule one: darkness is your budget multiplier
Before you spend a dollar on fixtures, plan how you will get the hall dark. Block skylights, kill the fluorescents, and suddenly every light you do bring reads ten times stronger. A few metres of drape hides basketball hoops better than any amount of balloon arch.
The one-box dance floor: GigBar Move ILS
If the committee buys or hires one lighting item, make it a GigBar Move ILS system: moving heads, derbies, washes, strobe and laser on a single stand, sound-active or foot-controlled, running off one power point. Two of them either side of the DJ and the dance floor is done. For bigger halls, a pair of Intimidator moving head spots adds genuine aerial beams.
The centrepiece nobody regrets: a real mirror ball
Theme trends come and go; the mirror ball has outlasted all of them. A one-metre professional mirror ball over the dance floor, a DMX rotator rated for its weight, and a couple of pinspots to hit it — that is the photo every attendee posts. (Rigging a 10 kg ball overhead is a job for someone competent: ask us about safe hanging hardware.)
Haze makes the beams visible
Moving-head beams are invisible in clean air. A modest hazer on low output — with the venue's fire alarm provider notified in advance — is what turns lights into lighting. Talk to your venue early; isolating smoke detectors is routine for professional venues and a deal-breaker discovered late everywhere else.
Sound: hire the grunt, buy the essentials
A ball needs more PA than most schools own, and that is fine — sub-and-top systems are exactly what production companies hire out. Where schools get lasting value from buying is the gear used year-round anyway: a solid pair of powered speakers like the FBT X-Lite 112A (whose Bluetooth input and mic channel cover assemblies, sports days and prizegivings all year) and a wireless microphone for the MC and awards.
